IN & OUT OF LIFE - Chapter 127 - It's a girl (Jeremy)

IT'S A GIRL (Jeremy ~ 1949-1950)

I enter a hospital room, holding flowers wrapped in plastic foil. My wife and three kids are with me. One of the girls is wearing a bright green coat. My sister-in-law Tracy is sitting up in the bed by the window, holding the baby. Josh is standing between the bed and the window with his hands in his pockets. The baby seems so big and… so light skinned. "He takes after you" I say to Josh. He looks proud and has a grin on his face. "It's a girl" he says, to which Tracy laughs with that sharp and loud cackle of hers. "Is it a guuurl?" my yellow-coated daughter asks in wonder. Penny's standing by, more mature than… well, than the baby's mother, if I may think so. Apparently having done her research, Penny suggests that we should leave the mother and baby alone for feeding. "Peeenny!" Louise promptly interrupts. Yes, Penny knows one mustn't bother the patient for too long. Nevertheless, her premature attempt at trying to be polite may have come across as rude. "What she mean?" Tracy says, then invites Penny to come closer to see the baby. "Oh daddy, oh daddy!" Molly (Suzy-Marie, still nicknamed Molly at the time) says, impatiently begging me to lift her up so she can see the baby. Josh lets her sit on the windowsill to look at the baby "in the good light". I take the opportunity to indulge in quenching my curiosity as I look at Tracy's face without makeup. No fake eyelashes, no… eyebrows? I guess she paints them on. "Is she frageel?" Molly asks, pronouncing "fragile" the way Tracy does. Louise chuckles.
