IN & OUT OF LIFE - Chapter 114 - The dying man (Anna)
THE DYING MAN (Anna) ~ 1327-1350
I'm in a small room with a high ceiling. I feel safe here. I take care of simple household tasks like warming the milk and cleaning out the chamber pot. In my spare time, I continue on the weaving loom by the wall, as I'm doing now. "Anna" the old man groans from his bed. I turn my head towards him and smile. 'Come here, my little (one)' he says, putting out his hand. I get up and go to him. My dress feels soft and warm. He has a bald patch on the left side of his head, and liver spots in his face as well as a large birth mark near his right cheekbone. I'm not to touch him physically, so I put my hand on the blue fabric over his left shoulder. 'Help me' he whispers laboriously. I feel tears well up in my eyes. I grab his left hand, which he's still holding up, and place it over his thigh. I then walk around the end of the bed to his other side, and place a pillow by his back in order to help him turn to his left side. He moans from the pain. "Anna!" he says, a bit louder now, 'Come here.' I go back to his left side. He looks at me for a moment, and then says: 'Goodbye.' Within seconds, he goes completely silent. His mouth is open and there is no more sign of him breathing. I look at the weaving loom and think: Well, there's no point in finishing that project anymore. I'll have to call for the people that take away dead bodies. After that, I'll empty the place and clean it so a new family can come live here. And then I'll be on my way to help in another household. It would be nice if it was a household with children and if I could also do some sewing. A large house would be nice so I don't get bored, one where I can go up and down stairs and do things outdoors, maybe even run errands.
Q: How old are you?
Anna: Fifteen.
Fragment of Anna's life have been mentioned in previous book though her life has not been covered extensively. She died of pestilence, aged twenty three, having succumbed to the illness herself after burying her brother who had already suffered the same fate.
